Sunrain

/

May 10, 2013

/ Jeff Marshall

Yesterday saw a lot of things good and bad, and everything in between.

Coffee spilled on the counter, but it made interesting shapes. A baby skeksis greeted the world (persistently and loudly). A marine osprey helicopter flew by. One chickadee gave another a piggy-back ride. Obama flew by. Possibly even Prince Harry, too.

Sun and rain happened simultaneously…

On the way to the retreat, we got a little lost… when we stopped to ask directions,
the llama wasn’t much help.

Backyard Photographic: Retrospective

/

April 11, 2013

/ Jeff Marshall

Ever since I did a photo shoot of a praying mantis on the driveway two summers ago, I’ve been taking pictures within the confines of the yard (~600 square feet) and posting them on a blog titled “Backyard Photographic.” In full disclosure, sometimes the shots take place in the greater “backyard” shared by all mankind (a.k.a. the entire planet earth). Part of the blog’s purpose is to inspire everyone to look closer at the world around you, right outside the door.

Early on, I was advised to come up with a more unique logo, mostly to avoid potential litigation for copyright infringement. Since then, I’ve been striving towards a mark that captures the feel of the work and my frame of mind while I’m shooting: seriously playful!

The latest seems dangerously close… here is a gallery documenting the development. See if you can guess the inspiration for those earliest versions…

blue-angels-sequesteredThe government’s sequestration actually impacts people’s livelihood, so I won’t say more than I’m sad to see the budget cutbacks mean no Blue Angels this year.

Here are highlights of the Blue Angels at the Chicago Air and Water Show in 2012.

In this second set of photos form the Naval Academy Museum, modern-style ships are the focus.

I found these to be current equivalents of vintage galleons.

us-navalacademymuseum-titlecard1The U.S. Naval academy museum in Annapolis, Maryland, features a gallery of model ships in display cases. Some are simple and small, almost toy like, while others are large and intricately detailed.

In this first set are photos of the older-styled ship models and memorabilia.
